The Leatherman of SmartWatches #WearableWednesday

Some of you are aware of HOPE X (Hackers of Planet Earth Con) that happens in NY. One of the largest wearable tech gadgets spotted this year was one that was hard to miss — the SmarTwatCh. Hack A Day offers a great description of the piece.

The front of the SmarTwatCh is an authentic 2×20 glass encapsulated VFD running at 60 Volts, chosen for its danger and character. Inside the 3D printed enclosure is a Teensy 3.0, pots, knobs, and switches, a laser, LEDs, and an alcohol sensor because, “the future is quantified drinking”.

The inventor is Zack Freedman, and he has included some other capabilities on his watch that you should know about, like a laser pointer, flashlight, and a TV-B-Gone. You really need to watch Zack demoing his product because there is a certain sarcastic humor that is well worth your time. I really like the comment about how important it is for one wearable to control another one.

The point is, most people are trying to keep their wearable tech undercover (well, excluding the Glass wearers). This piece just puts it front and center and becomes an instant conversation piece. It’s very related to Zack’s message on his site which says, “Hello ladies, gentlemen and cyborgs”.  Maybe we should be taking the cyborg part more seriously. If we are already training space civilians, then larger wearable tech with practical purposes may be exactly what is needed. So, get your 3D printer out and start putting together something sizable.
